In the Penal Colony
June 7 - July 14 2001
A new music-theater by Philip Glass Libretto by Rudolph Wurlitzer Music by Philip Glass Based on the story by Franz Kafka Directed by JoAnne Akalaitis

A traveler visits a remote tropical island to observe the unique meth-ods practiced at a penal colony there. When the officer in charge demonstrates the Harrow, an elaborate machine for capital punish-ment, both menís theories on crime and correction, mercy and justice are put to the ultimate test.

Renowned composer Philip Glass and award-winning director JoAnne Akalaitis, two of the most distinguished avant-garde artists working today, transform Kafkaís strange masterpiece into a haunting and utterly original work of music-theater for two singers, three actors and a string quintet. Classic Stage Company presents the New York pre-miere of this international theatrical event.
