On the eve of the Nazis' election a group of German medical students faces a future in which everything will change. One of them, Peter Karlanner, is torn between two people he loves: his girlfriend Helene, who is Jewish, and his closest friend Tessow, a fervent member of the Party. Seduced into joining-up, Karlanner leaves Helene, only to find faith and reason, friendship and love swept away by "the storm break-ing over Germany, over all Germany." This remarkable and affecting play was written by a leading Austrian playwright in the spring of 1933, just months after the events it portrays. The coming catastrophe resonates eerily in every word. Classic Stage Company premieres a new adaptation of this notable work.
