The New York Premiere
Ghosts
October 31 - December 8, 2002
By Henrik Ibsen
Translated by Lanford Wilson
Directed by Daniel Fish

THE CRITICS

"As portrayed by a luscious-looking Amy Irving, Helen Alving has a hint of the erotic hunger Kathleen Turner brings to Mrs. Robinson on Broadway. Amy Irving brings a bruising emotional commitment to her part, especially in the final face-off with Oswald."
-The New York Times

"Director Daniel Fish does an admirable job of setting up a stark dramatic framework upon which the characters size each other up and cope with, or reveal, the 'ghosts' that haunt them."
-Associated Press

"The reason to see the Classic Stage production of Ibsen's play is Amy Irving's luminous rendition of Mrs. Alving, and the surprising evolution of her relationship with her sickly son, played with a fascinating brand of epicene virility by Ted Schneider."
-The New Yorker

"Cleanly directed by Daniel Fish, and played crisply by a tight ensemble, GHOSTS continues to raise compelling questions about duty, love, and morality."
-Village Voice

SYNOPSIS
The two lovers from the garden have come back to haunt their children.

Dedicating a monument to her late husbandÕs memory, Helen Alving is ready to close a chapter in her familyÕs life. But her son, returning home from abroad, brings with him a terrible secret. Before sunrise the truth will burn around them both, and the ghosts of their pasts will return to reveal a fatherÕs terrible legacy to his son.

IbsenÕs masterpiece examines the vast social themes of morality, hypocrisy, and individual responsibility even as it exposes the intense emotional currents that buffet a family across the generations.

One of the great plays in world drama in the New York premiere of a bold and frank new translation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lanford Wilson (TalleyÕs Folly, Burn This). Daniel Fish (Off BroadwayÕs True Love) directs.
